“1987” was featured at a public screening I ran as producer in November of 2010, that also featured works by other students about race, assault, peer-pressure, and bullying. It has been screened at the "Art as Resistance to Dominant Masculinity" festival at MassArt (March 2011), and the 2011 MassArt All School Show (April 2011).
One Fall Saturday, Circa 1987
Silent animated typographic installation, 2010-2011. Formatted for 16:9 widescreen.
This short black and white movie of text tells of how I was attacked by a classmate as a child. One would think that the attack itself is the moment of trauma, but as events unfold, one sees that the figures of authority in the story leave lasting effects. The piece ties race, gender, family, and social class in one story.
